School Community

Recruitment

Impact: It is important that we succeed in our recruitment methods at the start of each new school year to grow our team and appeal to the high interest at our school.
As soon as the school year begins, we start to advertise for our preliminary informational meeting. We put up posters like the one to the right and advertise on our social media, and we put reminders in Video and Live Announcements. In addition, we attend Club Fair and get an email list of students who might be interested in robotics. We hold an informational meeting one day at lunch before our first official meeting to try to get more people interested in joining robotics without any pressure.

Lip Dub

Impact: Involvement in school leadership activities like the Lip Dub is fun for our team members and promotes greater engagement in the Aragon Community.

Every other year, our school’s Leadership hosts an All-School Lip Dub. This is a fun event that unites the whole school and all the different extracurriculars. In 2019, we got involved by applying for a ten-second vignette that specifically features robotics driving around one of our FRC robots. In addition, we had around 40 members standing with robotics during the rest of the filming, which is more people than nearly any other group had.

Showcases

Impact: Demonstrations for our school community help members feel like a part of the school and give us a chance to present our work.
Open House:
The purpose of Open House is to invite parents to Aragon so they can see what their students have been working on. Primarily, parents spend time in students’ classrooms, talking with teachers and seeing what students do in classes. We feel it is also important for parents to see what students are doing in their extracurriculars, so we always have our robots outside driving around so parents of our team members as well as other members of the school community can see what we do in robotics.

Club Fair:
Club Fair is an important event for our recruitment process. Even though Aragon Robotics is not technically a club, we still participate in Club Fair. During this event, all Aragon students walk around center court during lunch and see all the clubs at our school. We set up a table with a sign-up sheet and marketing materials, and we also drive an FTC robot around center court. This gives us great visibility in our school community and encourages more new students, including both underclassmen and upperclassmen, to join the team at the start of the new year each fall.
8th Grade Expo Night:
Expo Night is a yearly Aragon event where prospective Aragon students who are currently in 8th grade come visit the Aragon Campus on a weekday evening. They get to see all the clubs, academic departments, and student activities in the gym, then they see a presentation by the administration in the Theater. During the Expo portion of the night, we set up a table so parents and students could come by and see what we do in robotics. We also let students drive our robot.

School Media

Impact: Advertising at our school builds our brand and reputation at Aragon, helps members feel like a part of the school, and inspires new members to join our team.

Live and Video Announcements:
We regularly put updates in weekly Live Announcements and Video Announcements. This is a great way to communicate with the whole school community. With this, we ensure that all students know what robotics is up to, from upcoming informational meetings to competition results. Strong communication with the student body establishes our reputation as an organization on campus.
School Newspaper - The Aragon Outlook:
Our school newspaper, the Aragon Outlook, writes about robotics at least two times per year. They focus on exciting things we do, such as Outreach efforts or recent competitions. This increases our visibility in the school community because many students, staff, and family members read the Outlook’s monthly print edition.

Bulletin Boards and Displays:
Aragon Robotics has several spaces around Aragon where we display our achievements. These include display cases in a hallway and outside of our shop, a bulletin board in our teacher mentor’s classroom, and a section of the club bulletin board. We normally display awards, updates, team marketing materials, and copies of recent team newsletters in addition to photos and other information. This increases our visibility on campus and ensures that our school knows what we are working on.
